Attorney General Strange is Inaugural Speaker for

Marion Military Institute
Leadership Series

Attorney General Luther Strange gave remarks at the Marion Military Institute this week to the Corps of Cadets in support of their Leadership and Character Development program.  The program serves to synchronize and integrate cadet leadership and character development initiatives through a formal academic concentration, leadership seminars, discussion groups (facilitated by selected members of MMI’s faculty and staff), faculty and staff mentoring, service learning, and the Paul B. Anderson Guest Lecture Series.

The intent of this lecture series is for the guest speaker to address a topic related to leadership and character development, specifically as it relates to the Marion Military Institute cadets. 

Attorney General Strange was honored to be the first speaker in the leadership series and spoke about the importance of responsibility and accountability as a leader. 

“Here at Marion you are in the process of becoming a leader.  Leadership comes with great responsibility. Whether you go on to one of our nation’s great service academies or onto college, you take with you the values and knowledge you have gained here at Marion,” stated Attorney General Strange. 

“Having the ability to be prepared with the right knowledge, previous experience, and determination to make the right decision is what it takes to be a responsible leader.  I encourage you to seize those opportunities when they arise, because you never know when you will be called upon to lead.” 

Attorney General Strange challenged the cadets to prepare themselves to be future leaders:  “I challenge you to prepare yourselves now as young adults and future leaders to be able to answer the call whatever that may be. We don’t need more excuses; we need men and women prepared to take responsibility for their actions.  Our state and our nation need you – and we expect no less.  If we do our part, Alabama and our great country will be a better place for it.  It won’t always be easy, but there is an old saying that ‘A ship in a harbor is safe, but that’s not what ships are built for.’”

On September 24,  2012 , the entire Corps of Cadets will divide up into small discussion groups, and discuss a hypothetical dilemma-based scenario designed to reinforce the message provided on September 12th – accountability, and responsibility for oneself and for others, especially in a peer leadership environment.
